What do you guys do with left over zinc pennies and copper sandwich halves?
I only go through 8 dollars in pennies and maybe $20 in halves a week. Do you guys keep the zinc and copper sandwiches or return them? For now I'm keeping them because...
1. I don't want to further delute coins I may go through in the future. 2. It's good to have some FRNs on hand. A good portion of mine are in halves and pennies. 3. Would coins (even fiat) be worth something in a SHTF or depression scenario? 4. Do banks get mad when you drop off 10,000 rolled pennies for $100 cash? The last two are questions |
Re: What do you guys do with left over zinc pennies and copper sandwich halves?
I usually go to the bank to dump the zinc. I am pretty low key about it, might bring in about 2000 zincolns every other week, although they do still have a small look of disgust on their face (so I try to mix it up with other banks with coin counters in the area). I figure if it's not on a regular basis they can live with it
As for halves, I usually just spend them. I can usually liquidate them fairly fast and they are a great conversation starter |
Re: What do you guys do with left over zinc pennies and copper sandwich halves?
i've just been stockpiling pennies. everytime i stack away a $25 box, i know i'm stashing at least $25 worth of zinc and copper (my sample rate is that about 25% are copper).
i tried getting some halves but it was a complete skunk. it was kind of fun spending them, though. the lady i bought my lottery tickets from told me her husband is in a wheelchair and collects halves and is always bugging her for halves. so it was an easy way to do her a favor. i suppose if i wanted to do her husband a favor i could stick a 40% or 90% silver half in a roll. sounds like it would make his week. |

I take rolled dimes and quarters and I always get a bit of a disgusted face from the tellers. Like I'm some caveman for bringing in coins. Maybe it's just the bank I go to . |
